independence day, a chance to free your mind

i'm taking a painting break because I have a lot of things floating around in my brain.

some of the things floating around dance around the free art movement.
and for some reason, I feel like I need to justify myself and what I do...for whatever reason?!

these are all fragments so stay with me, people..
or leave me.

whatever.

anyway,

I hate it when people say they live by a phrase or a quote because it's so lame and cliche...
but, I think i'm lame and cliche, so....

I live primarily by 2 quotes:
"when I rest, I rust"
and
"be the change you wish to see in the world" <--hi, this is where i become cliche.

But, if the 2nd is true and it is what I believe in (because I do)
then the change I want to see in the world is: more art. art accessibility. art for everyone. a redefinition on the terms of art.

so how do I do that?
free art.

not just giving art away for free, but actually putting some freedom in art

how do you put freedom in art when it technically is one of the freest things on the planet?
hmm...

this is where "when I rest, I rust" comes into play...because I never let these ideas rest in my head.

stop me if I'm wrong or if you see conflict building, because these are thoughts literally FLOATING behind my eyelids...
oh and,
forgive me for using simple words, I gave up the college worth words awhile ago.

I make art and I give it away for free because I want to.

I don't want "free art"  to live by a stupid artist statement, and I don't want to have to explain my reasoning for it because, having an artist statement of who you are and why you're doing what you're doing confines what was originally free.
I don't want guidelines,
I don't terms and agreements.
I don't want any of that.
I just do it, just because.

Now, that's not to say I don't want a personal art statement.
And, I'm also not saying that I live by and only for free art.
It doesn't define me, in the same way I choose not to define it...It is just something that I do.
If you want to do it to, you can, but that's completely up to you.

i believe free art  should be something done independently, and hopefully...one day, everyone will do it, just because....
not because their affiliated with me
or because their affiliated with a bunch of like-minded thinkers...
simply, just because they want to give out their art for free...

I make art to sell and give away, and I shouldn't have to feel like I can't do either or both.
Things that don't agree can live side by side peacefully if you allow them to.

And I my original wants are:
 to make art for people
to make art more accessible
and to have more art all around...
then I think I'm doing what I want.

I'm an art teacher, and I am an artist. I give art away for free, and I make my living off of it.
I spend my time thinking about art activities for children, and for myself. it's no longer about it being a hobby, or a part-time job, it's not a full-time either...it's all the time. this is who i am, i think.
no, i know.

and, I think i'm okay with that.

back to painting.
